Connecting to N3
N3
is the new, integrated network for the NHS, a
combination of broadband connections and network
services that will link all NHS sites in England
and Wales.
N3
is replacing the NHSnet as the network on which
to run the new IT systems being delivered by Connecting
for Health (the NHS National Programme for IT).
Joint
Working & Access to Information Sharing
In
line with government programmes and the requirements
of IEG4, local authorities are seeking connection
to N3 and NHSnet to derive the benefits of collaborative
working and access to central processes such as:
- ISA
(Information Sharing and Assessment)
- SAP
(Single Assessment Process)
- CRS
(Integrated Care Record Service)
- STEIS
(Strategic Executive Information Service)
Security
Requirements
In
order to connect with N3, organisations must first
ensure that their information security regime
is conformant with NHS security policies that
encompass BS7799 standards.
As
information security specialists with extensive
experience of NHSnet / N3, BS7799 and local government/health
computing initiatives, Hytec is ideally suited
to build secure solutions for third parties connecting
to N3.
Connecting
to N3
The
design must be conformant with BS7799 standards
for information security. These dictate that the
following elements be considered within the design
submissions:
- Security
policies
- Network
connections and network security
- Authentication
- Information
categorisation
- Intrusion
detection
The
Requirement
For
any non-Health Service organisation wishing to
connect to N3 it is mandatory that, having applied
for connection, they must undertake an independent
network audit. This applies to all non-NHS entities,
for example local authorities (excluding Social
Services), housing associations, commercial healthcare
companies or external managed applications providers.
Gap
Analysis
Hytec's
N3 Gap Analysis service provides an audit of your
network and physical security. The service
verifies that your information security regime
conforms to requirements for N3 connection, reviews
your security policies and provides recommendations
as appropriate.
The
output is a corrective action plan detailing those
actions required to bring your organisation
to a state of readiness for connection to N3.
Your security policies will be reviewed and you
will receive a report providing an overview of
your existing infrastructure with analysis of
both network and physical security.
