A
Honeynet is a high interaction honeypot designed
primarily for research, to gather information
on the intruder. A honeynet is different from
traditional honeypots in that it is not a single
system but a network of multiple systems and applications,
such as Solaris, Linux, Windows NT and Cisco routers
etc, which are probed and attacked.
A
Honeynet creates a network environment which mirrors
a production network more realistically. Also
by having different systems with different applications
researchers are able to learn about differing
tools and tactics, thereby determining more accurately
specific intruder trends and signatures. In doing
so this can allow administrators to be more proactive
about system security rather than being purely
defensive, reacting to failures in the system.
