An initiative led by local authorities, the ODPM and the
e-Government Unit of the Cabinet Office, Government
Connect is the means of providing a secure and sustainable framework for authorities, and their partners across the
public sector, to deliver personalised joined up services
to the citizens in their community.
By bringing together common technology, toolkits and communication policies, Government Connect aims to
improve electronic service delivery by central and local government, with real benefits for the communities they
serve. Citizens will for the first time be able to enjoy the convenience of completing transactions online without
having to send by post or turn up in person with their
passport, driving licence or utility bill as proof of identity.
Underpinning the programme is common authentication,
a trusted Wide Area Network infrastructure, the GCSx (Government Connect Secure extranet), secure email
and a structured messaging hub. This is required to
ensure secure communication and information sharing
both between authorities and with central government’s
GSi (Government Secure intranet).

Every authority utilising Government Connect will be
equired to implement a Code of Connection (CoC)
prior to connecting to the GCSx.
Hytec’s expertise is in building IT infrastructures that
support secure connectivity and information sharing.
Through our experience of Codes of Connection and
connecting to secure networks, such as GCSx and the
NHS N3, we have become a trusted advisor to bodies
such as London Connects, Socitm, ADSS and NHS CfH (Connecting for Health).
We provide information security consultancy, infrastructure
design and managed security services to local government,
health authorities and commercial organisations, especially
where connection to secure networks is required.
London Connects, the body that brings together public,
private and voluntary sector groups to support the delivery
of e-government across the capital, recently commissioned
Hytec to scope and design an Extranet service covering
seven London Boroughs. The Extranet allows the London Boroughs of Havering, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Barking & Dagenham, Tower Hamlets, Redbridge and Newham to share services and a shared link to the Government Gateway and Government Connect (GCSx) services.
